Product Review:

True to its packaging True Organics’ Organic Cheddar is a full flavored cheddar that we have used extensively in sandwiches, grated on pizza and in general cooking.  Unlike the mainland Tasty we used to purchase prior to discovering True Organics’ organic Cheddar the cheese does not crumble when sliced and is easy to slice with a sharp knife.

Its ingredients include Organic Milk, Salt, Starter Culture and Non-Animal Rennet, making this product suitable for vegetarians.

True Organic Product Availability

The website shows a range of other cheeses (Mozzarella, Edam, Gouda), butters and milks within the companies range of products.  It also has a useful where to buy inquiry form.

Not so useful for ACT residents is the news that there are no distributors of the True Organic range of dairy products in the ACT.  Expand the search to regional NSW though and you start to have some hits, including the major supermarkets, Coles and Woolworths.

Though not listed on the website as a distributor (yet) we purchased our 1kg block of True Organic Cheddar at Costco (the US retailing giant opened its doors in Canberra in July 2011).  Since the 1kg packaging option is not listed on the True Organic website we have to assume it was introduced for the Costco bulk purchasing model.  We therefore have high hopes of the Organic cheddar being available at Costco on an ongoing basis.

A quick search of Woolworths online delivery service showed that True Organic Cheddar could be purchased for delivery in our area, but the price is not competitive with Costco.
A 200 gram block of True Organic Cheddar will cost $5.99 purchased from Woolworths online store (delivered to your home) whereas a 1 kg block at Costco set us back $11.39.

For those of you who don’t like numbers the equivalent Costco pricing for 200grams is about $2.28.  Granted Woolworths will deliver, but $3.71 is quite a premium for home delivery!

The per kg pricing of True Organic Cheddar in Woolworths (according to their own website) is $29.95 versus $11.39 at Costco.  I think we can all see how quick the payback on a Costco membership can be!

Would I buy it again?

Yes!  As long as this cheese remains available at Costco I will have no qualms purchasing it.

Did you know?

For those concerned about the bulk purchase model at Costco, did you know that you can freeze cheese?  Cut your 1kg block into manageable portions and freeze!
